Background

Recent growth in the research activities and the well-established educational programs of the School of Information Technology (ITE) is enabling a significant expansion.

In 2018 the total research expenditures exceeded 70 MSEK and the school hosted over 850 students. Over the next two years, the School will grow significantly.

The Department of Intelligent Systems and Digital Design (ISDD) at Halmstad University is seeking to appoint a full-time researcher focused on Halmstad Intelligent Home (HINT). The ISDD Department, has for a long time had a strong scientific output in Health Technology. Past research related to HINT was to a large extent done as part of CAISR, including the SA3L project, and was an important part of our scientific agenda. With the new collaboration with Halmstad Hospital and Region Halland, however, there is a need to expand the scope. As part of "Ai-way Halland", the University has established a strong network of public sector and commercial actors, and our goal is to make HINT the focal point of those relationships. The major part of the employment is intended to be research, but technical management of the infrastructure and interactions with our external partners are also important parts of the employment. This is in addition to general expectation of senior staff to be involved in doctoral education, teaching and supervising undergraduate and graduate students, etc. The appointed researcher is expected to develop a high-quality funded research program (together with colleagues as well as existing and new external partners) and must be committed to excellence in teaching at both graduate and undergraduate levels. One prioritized area for development is data mining with a specific focus on self-monitoring of complex systems, while collaboration with other scientific areas is important.

Research is often carried out in collaboration with companies and public sector. The research on digital service innovation is one of the prioritized research areas where continued development of research strength is expected in order to reach excellence in international and national collaborations. This area, which is expected to attract considerable industrial interest also in the future, will be an important research area for Halmstad University in the coming years.

Description

Example tasks can include:

*) Facilitate the infrastructure behind the concept of “Virtual Hospital” developed by the  Health Technology Center (HCH)

*) Involvement in the UCAmI cup, a competition based on data collected in our smart environments.

*) Set up SensorCentral at HINT to harmonize with other partners like Ulster, Luleå and JAEN, who are using SensorCentral as a common middleware.

*) Curate activity classification and deviation detection modules developed by the REMIND consortium and try to get them to work in our environment.

*) Create an activity viewer. This would simulate a smart clinic/hospital that can follow-up on patients at home. One goal is getting models to work in different environments. Most are not working in any spectacular way, they are only doing supervised learning that works on one data set. We can have 3 different sets of sensors at HINT and we could collect very nice datasets with differences that we could explore for transfer learning.

Qualifications

The position is intended for applicants with a recent PhD degree in computer engineering, computer science or electrical engineering. The applicant should be an active researcher in the relevant field with a good publication record. Experience from research and development in an industrial environment as well as professional experience in interaction design and similar areas is desirable.

The applicant must be engaged, structured, accountable and have good interpersonal skills and ability to take initiative. Excellent leadership, innovation ability, pedagogical competence, and experience in cooperation with industry are desirable.

Salary level

Background
Recent growth in the research activities and the well-established educational programs of the School of Information Technology (ITE) is enabling a significant expansion.

In 2018 the total research expenditures exceeded 70 MSEK and the school hosted over 850 students. Over the next two years, the School will grow significantly.

Description
The recruited person will be expected to teach up to 20% and do research at least 80%, within one or several scientific projects. Research activities will depend on competences and interests, but are expected to build upon our existing portfolio.

Examples include the iMedA project, which aims to improve medication adherence of hypertensive patients, by addressing three research questions. First, how to create a meaningful and comprehensive representation of each patient based on comprehensive medical data. Second, how to predict different clinical outcomes (e.g., re-admissions) and non-clinical behaviors (e.g., medication non-adherence) using interpretable machine learning methods. Third, how to identify a selection of intervention strategies that are most appropriate for a particular patient, by combining both data-driven and knowledge driven approaches. The overall scope is to increase information driven care capabilities using AI/ML on data that includes, but is not limited to, Electronic Health records.

Another example, CAISR+ project, focuses on aware systems research and autonomous knowledge creation. By this we mean research on the design of systems that, as autonomously as possible, can construct knowledge from real life data created through the interaction between a system and its environment. Such systems should be able to handle events that are unknown at the time of design. One research question addresses machine activity recognition and representation learning using streaming data. The same type of machine will not be used in exactly the same way in two locations (i.e. a high level of intraclass variability), there is an expected high inter-class similarity (some operations look very similar), there is a high amount of uninteresting data (e.g. “other” is a very common activity), and there is high class imbalance.

All these research questions pose challenges that go beyond current state-of-the-art solutions in terms of information fusion from diverse data sources, identification of relevant factors, interpretability of data mining results, causal relation discovery and augmenting machine learning with expert knowledge.

AI and ML is an important part of our education. The recruited person will have an opportunity to advance Bachelor and Master level courses such as Artificial Intelligence, Learning Systems, Data Mining, Applied Data Mining, and Deep Learning. The person will also be involved in the Graduate professional development program (second-cycle courses targeted at the business sector). Finally, the recruited person is expected to participate in supervision of thesis projects for bachelor and master level students, as well as co-supervise PhD students.

Principal duties
To undertake data mining and machine learning research in one or several of the application domains where the university conducts research
To contribute to academic publications and conference papers (where appropriate leading on these)
To contribute to education at the department

In Sweden the position of postdoctoral researcher is a qualifying appointment, which is intended to enable the employee to develop their independence as a researcher and to obtain merits that may develop their competence for another post with higher eligibility requirements.

Qualification
A postdoc position requires that the doctoral degree was awarded within three years of the application deadline. The applicant must hold a doctoral degree in Artificial Intelligence/Data Mining/Machine Learning/Information Technology or related fields. The applicant needs to demonstrate a strong research profile in the fields related to topics of interest for CAISR research environment, including recent activities with high impact. The scientific production is expected to be published in high-quality, peer-reviewed research journals and conferences. Documented experience from innovation, research and development in an industrial environment is also a strong merit. The applicant should share the value that diversity and equality among researchers and teachers brings higher quality to research and education.

For appointment as a postdoc, the following assessment criteria will be applied:

- Ability to conduct research of high international quality in artificial intelligence, specifically data mining and machine learning
- Documented experience from research in collaboration with industrial partners and/or interdisciplinary teams
- Ability to conduct high-quality teaching and to develop courses at different levels
- Experience in supervision of master / PhD students
- Ability to attract external funding
- Dynamism, curiosity, independence, creativity and good teamwork
- Willingness to address opportunities and challenges within AI, machine learning and data mining

Salary
Salary is to be settled by negotiation.

Application
Applications should be sent via Halmstad University's recruitment system Varbi(see link on this page).

The application package shall consist of:
1) a cover letter stating the purpose of the application and a brief statement of why you believe that your goals are well-matched with the goals of this position, together with a description of future research plans

2) a CV that includes at least - a list of previous degrees, with dates and institutions - a complete list of publications with 2-3 most relevant ones for this position marked - a description of previous research and other work experience and links to online copies of the most important publications

Background

Recent growth in the research activities and the well-established educational programs at the School of Information Technology (ITE) at Halmstad University is enabling a significant expansion.

In 2018, the total research expenditures where over 70MSEK and the number of students exceeded 850. Center for Applied Intelligent Systems Research at Halmstad University announces the availability of a fully-funded Ph.D. position in Computer Science and Engineering.

Description

The selected Ph.D. student will carry out research to develop general lifetime models for all vital components in the electrical driveline of heavy duty vehicles. Hybrid and fully electric buses must take advantage of predictive maintenance services based on Machine Learning in order to remain competitive in the market despite their increased cost. Those new technical solutions are enabled by the possibility of collecting more precise and extensive data. Motivating example is the main battery, a component that is responsible for large fraction of the vehicle cost, and is expected to survive over 10 years. In the project we will create a data-driven model for battery health degradation, based on Transfer Learning paradigm utilising recent advancements in the field of deep learning, namely Generative Adversarial Networks. Historical data on failures of electric driveline components is not available due to its technological novelty, thus the right support for drivers, fleet operators and OEMs requires studies and development of new ML techniques. The goal is to enable predictive and prescriptive maintenance solutions that are capable of adapting to rapid changes in technology and continuous arrival of new observational data. This must be bootstrapped by leveraging available expert knowledge in the form of adaptive models for the evolving technology through AI solutions.

The research will be performed within the EVE (Extending life of Vehicles within Electromobility era) project in close collaboration with Volvo Buses and Volvo Group Connected Solutions. Therefore, the candidate will be spending time both at Halmstad University and at Volvo premises in Gothenburg. The employment also includes teaching responsibilities corresponding to a maximum of 20% of full-time. Applicant will be part of an international research group and an English-speaking environment.

This is a full-time position available from June 2019 (or as soon as possible afterwards) for a period of four years (extended one year at a time, subject to satisfactory progress of the Ph.D. study). Enough resources to fund experiments and conference travels are available.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate has a Master’s degree in computer science, machine learning, data science, robotics, mathematics, physics, or a related engineering discipline. A strong background in machine learning, or data mining is desirable. Excellent programming skills, analytical problem solving and organizational abilities are required. Prior practical experience in deep learning is a plus.

Students expecting to finalize their degree during the spring 2019 are also welcome to apply. Only persons who are being admitted, or already have been admitted, to doctoral studies at an institution of higher education may be appointed doctoral students. (The Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, § 3). The student’s ability to benefit from doctoral studies will be taken into account when we make the appointment. (The Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, § 5).

Salary

Doctoral students are employees of the University and paid a salary according to a uniform salary scale, adjusted in relation to the progress in education.

The position includes studies up to a doctoral degree and is annually extended in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, §7. The total employment period is four years but may be extended to a maximum of five years if the student performs 20% teaching or other tasks within the university.

Application

Applications should be sent via Halmstad University's recruitment system Varbi (see link on this page).

1. a cover letter stating the purpose of the application and a brief statement of why you believe that your background and goals are well-matched with the goals of this position,

2. a Curriculum Vitae that includes at least

a. a list of previous degrees, dates, and institution, transcripts for higher-education studies until most recent available

b. a complete list of publications and a description of previous research and other work experience and links to online copies of the most important publications

3. copies of previous transcripts and degrees,

4. a copy of previous publications, if any, and

5. contact information for three reference persons.

List of qualifications and other documents that the applicant wishes to refer to should be enclosed with the application. All copies must be attested.
