Department of Business Studies at Halmstad University invites applications for 4 positions as Ph.D. students (Earlier Stage Researchers/ESRs) to be enrolled in the Innovation Sciences Doctoral Programme at Halmstad University.

LNETN PhD projects
The positions will be part of the project  ‘Legitimation of Newness and Its Impact on EU Agenda for Change’ (LNETN), which is an EU-funded Innovative Training Network (ITN) under the Marie Sk?odowska-Curie Actions (MSCA). It is designed to train a new generation of Doctoral Graduates with Inter-disciplinary, Inter-sectoral, Inter-technology, International and transferable knowledge, skills and broad vision.

LNETN offers 15 ESR (doctoral candidates) positions to begin in September 2020. Halmstad University will host 4 of these positions.

- ESR 1 position: Competing for legitimation
- ESR 2 position: International growth in life sciences: the influence of new institutions and policies on the emergence of new product concepts
- ESR 3 position: Legitimation process of new actors and new business-policy partnerships
- ESR 9 position: Styles of representation of newness and change in creative industries

Qualifications
You should be a passionate high achieving, early stage researcher, wishing to enrich your intellectual development and career potential through Inter-disciplinary, Inter-sectoral, Inter-technology and International mobility, coupled with high level training in research and transferable knowledge and skills.

Eligibility criteria:

- Must, at the date of recruitment, be  within the first 4 years (full-time  equivalent research experience) of your research career and not have a doctoral degree
- Must not have resided or carried out your main activity (e.g. work, studies) in the country where you have been recruited for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date
- Must demonstrate English proficiency (ability to communicate fluently in English, in oral and written form). This may include a sample of writing or attainment of a degree instructed in English
- Must have a master degree or an equivalent qualification

The successful candidates will receive a 36-month, full-time employment contract as per MSCA regulations for Early Stage Researchers. Halmstad University is organised in four schools, where the School of Business, Engineering and Science hosts the Department of Construction and Energy Engineering. At this department, the Halmstad University District Heating and Cooling Research Group has been active since 2009.

The Department of Construction and Energy Engineering at Halmstad University invites applications for the position as Ph.D. student in Energy Technology with specialisation in District Heating, as soon as possible. The position will be part of the Halmstad University District Heating and Cooling Research Group, which conducts research and education within the field both in national and international contexts, with a focus on efficient and sustainable energy systems solutions for future Europe.

Work assignments
The position is a full-time employment and consists of research studies (80%) and institutional duties (20%). Research studies usually consist of research work (75%) and doctoral courses (25%). 

The overall orientation of the research studies is district heating in future Europe from an energy systems perspective, with main focus on increased integration of renewable energy sources, low-temperature excess heat sources, and 4th generation heat distribution technologies. Main work assignments consist of data gathering, data- and database management, development of methods and approaches, numerical and spatial analysis, literature studies, and writing of reports and scientific articles. Digital work environments include Geographical Information Systems (GIS), relational databases, geodatabases, standard statistical and mathematical software, as well as regular MS Office applications. As the research work to a considerable degree will take place in the context of research projects, a certain degree of travelling for participation in meetings, workshops, and conferences will be part of the assignment.

Institutional duties consist essentially of teaching activities, primarily lead of seminar and laboratory sessions, but as well lecturing, supervision, and course management during the progression of the assignment. Examples of courses where the applicant could contribute include at current Geographical Information Systems, District Heating Technology, Energy Supply, but also other energy related courses may become relevant.

Regarding doctoral courses to be attended, this will be decided by the main supervisor respecting the wishes and interests of the applicant. Suitability of doctoral courses may further be influenced by the selected university of registration, since usually one or two doctoral courses are mandatory at given graduate schools.

Qualifications
Applicants should possess in-depth knowledge and interest concerning district heating and/or energy systems analysis, as well as wide competence in the field of energy technology. Master of Science in Energy Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics or other suitable subject. Good communication skills in English, both in speech and writing, is a requirement.

Only persons who are being admitted, or already have been admitted, to doctoral studies at an institution of higher education may be appointed doctoral students. (The Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, § 3). The admission is typically planned together by the main supervisior and the PhD candidate. The student’s ability to benefit from doctoral studies will be taken into account when we make the appointment. (The Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, § 5).

The total employment period is four years but may be extended to a maximum of five years if the student performs 20% teaching or other tasks within the university.

The research within Renewable energy systems at Halmstad University focuses on two areas: district heating and wind power, where especially the district heating research is internationally highly renowned. Outside the energy group, though within the same research environment, the University conducts energy-related research on biogas and nano materials for applications in solar cells.

The research group is part of the research environment the Rydberg Laboratory for Applied Sciences (RLAS), where cross-disciplinary research is encouraged. Also part of this environment is Material Systems (functional surfaces, nano materials, etc.) and Bio Systems (biology, environmental studies, etc.). A process is ongoing to gain entitlement to award doctoral degrees within this environment. The University has defined the new research profile area Smart Cities and Communities, where Smart Energy is one of two subareas.

We are looking for a Professor who has an interest in researching and developing the field of renewable energy systems within the RLAS research environment, to take a key role in applying for the entitlement to award doctoral degrees, and to strengthen Halmstad University’s research profile area Smart Cities by taking part in the Smart Energy research. Regarding research orientation, interesting focus areas include (cross-over and system-level research encouraged):

Duties
Central to the position is to actively work with applications for external research funding and to ensure research funding for the development of the field renewable energy systems, especially with the development of the future doctoral education in mind.

As Professor, you will be contributing to establishing and developing research and education. The work consists of research, research management and participation in the development and implementation of education at undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate levels. Regarding education, courses at both bachelor and master level within the field of renewable energy, can be applicable for the position. You have a PhD in energy systems/electricity/physics, or equivalent. To qualify for appointment as a Professor, candidates must demonstrate both academic and teaching skills in accordance with the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4:3, and otherwise meet the requirements of rules and regulations for academic appointments at Halmstad University.

The overall scientific production should be extensive in high-quality research journals. Relevant pedagogical education is required (may however be completed during the first two years of employment), and experience from course development at different levels is a strong merit.
